Mission Direct trip

On 23rd March 2013 I will be flying out to Cambodia with Mission Direct for a 2 week mission project. I will be work with Cambodian Christians at the Fellowship of Hope to offer a better life to some of these people.

Cambodians are a broken people: between 1976 and 1979 Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge killed around 2 million Cambodians, or 20% of the population. But his regime’s murderous influence had another influence: families were split up and put in re-education camps. You were taught to trust nobody but the state itself.

Three decades later and the people of Cambodia still live in the shadow of this monstrous message – there is a whole generation that does not know how to bring up a family properly or trust others.

New Life Fellowship Phnom Penh is one of the largest churches in Cambodia with nearly 1000 church members – predominantly Khmer. They have a holistic church program and I will work alongside them in some of their ministries including:
  • Leadership Training Schools and Seminars to train church members and Cambodian leaders
  • Office Skills Training School with more than 1,000 young people studying 5 days per week, learning to speak English, use the computer and work in an office - developing job skills;
  • Primary Healthcare Ministry in Phnom Penh with 11 branches in provincial villages;
  • Children at Risk ministry supporting almost 100 children in a non-orphanage setting and providing opportunities for sponsorship;
  • Street children's ministry in Phnom Penh;
  • Micro-Enterprise
  • A Christian Primary School operating an English speaking teaching programme.
  • Evangelism, including showing the Jesus film.

I may work with the Children’s Ministry in Phnom Penh assisting with Joy Club by washing hair, presenting drama and songs and assisting with running this program in a slum.

I may also visit a dormitory for university students to share an evening of fellowship with them.

The project for 2013 will has yet to be finalised but look out for details in November 2012. Mission Direct will continue to work with Pastor Sara and his ministries and may be adding some further classrooms to the site at Harvest of Hope enabling more children to receive an education in this slum village on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.
